Life's Great Questions

by Scott Huckaby

Who am I?

Where did I come from?

Why am I here?

Where am I going?

Have you asked yourself these questions yet? Most people just write them off thinking, "who can know the answers to these questions?" Are you satisfied with this response? God's Word has the answers that will set your mind at ease.

Christians who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior know that they are a child of the Living God: "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12). Likewise, Christians know where they came from, the Lord is "He who formed you from the womb... who makes all things" (Isaiah 44:24).

Those who trust in Jesus know why they are here. "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works" (Ephesians 2:10). Good works last forever because they are used by God to save souls (1 Corinthians 3:8-15). This is why God gave us the Bible, so that we may know Him and help others to know Him (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Christians know they are going to spend eternity with the Lord in heaven. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Jesus told His disciples, "I go to prepare a place for you... that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:2-3).

If you're not satisfied that you know what life is all about, look to the source of all life: Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:16-17). Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). If you receive this gift of abundant life that Jesus offers, "you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). The truth is that, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23) and, "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).

But the Lord is, "not willing that any should perish" (2 Peter 3:9). "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Unfortunately, most will reject Him thinking that surely there are many ways to heaven (Matthew 7:13-14). However, Jesus was very clear when He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).

It's not possible to earn God's favor (Ephesians 2:8-9), all you must do to have eternal life is to trust in Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on the cross as full payment for your sins: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).
